Letter Writing Prompts

Thinking of writing to Postal Service for the Dead but don’t know what to write about? Below are a few prompts and additional resources to get inspired:

  • Have a trip coming up that you wish your person could witness? Send a “Wish You Were Here” postcard with your favorite vacation memory.

  • Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays: Go to your local drugstore and pick up a card that reminds you of them! Share a favorite memory from this holiday in the past, something you miss about them, or keep it simple with “thinking of you.”

  • Not sure what to write? Pick up some old magazines and make a collage of images and quotes that reflect them.

  • Have you experienced loss with a group of people such as your friends, family, or colleagues? Bring your group together and take 10 minutes to write freely to your person.

  • Send a holiday card! Take time to reflect on your accomplishments this past year and share them with your person.

  • Need a little structure? Write a haiku (5-7-5 syllables) that reminds you of your person. Think about the way they smelled, how they spoke, or their favorite food.

  • Buy a grief card from Greeting Grief.
