An Ode to Departed Matriarchs

Date: Thursday, May 9, 2024

Time: 6:00 to 8:00 PM

Description: Join Postal Service for the Dead (PSD) and pinaypages on May 9 in celebrating Mother’s Day through a lens of Philippine diasporic arts and culture at Lineage Performing Arts Center. We invite you to an evening of storytelling, creative movement, altar making, and creating Mother’s Day Cards to send to your departed matriarchs or motherly figures - all art making materials and postage will be provided. Please wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in. Here is a general timeline of the evening:

6:00 – Welcoming ice breaker and community altar building

6:15 – Welcoming performance by Jazlynn

6:30-7:30 – Storytelling, collaging, and letter writing

7:30 – Closing ceremony

This workshop will be facilitated by Janelle of PSD and Jazlynn of pinaypages, please see below for their full bios. The title of this workshop is inspired by Jazlynn’s movement work and open mic series both titled Ode to Matriarchs.

Where: This event will be held at Lineage Performing Arts Center located at 920 E. Mountain St. Pasadena, CA 91104.

Who: All ages - While this program is geared towards the Pilipinx/Pilipinx American community, all are welcome.

Materials: All materials will be provided. 

You are welcome to bring pictures or artifacts of your passed matriarchs for our altar, a tradition practiced by many Philippine/Philippine American families.

Facilitator Bios:

Jazlynn G.E.P. (she/they) is a storyteller, cultural worker, and performing artist dedicated to serving her kammunity. She has spent the past decade learning and sharing Philippine dance and culture around the world and currently serves Los Angeles, Orange County, and  the San Francisco Bay Area. Jazlynn continues to practice art as connection through her platform pinaypages where she offers opportunities for people to incorporate creativity and wellness into their everyday lives.

Janelle Ketcher (she/her) is an artist and facilitator from Des Moines, Iowa and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She holds a BFA in Painting, Art History and Social Practice from The Kansas City Art Institute, received the Certification in Social Emotional Arts from UCLArts & Healing and completed the End of Life Training Program at Going with Grace. As an arts professional, her main focus is to encourage creativity throughout our entire lifespan-from youth programming to end of life projects. As an emerging library science professional, she enjoys the intersections of creativity, information and resource access, archiving, and public service. Janelle is passionate about advocating for caregivers, nature, and exploring topics of dementia and death. Janelle is the Founder of Postal Service for the Dead, Assistant Director of Bed & Breakfast and is always down to get donuts.
